… I thought it was tomorrow.

Somehow we’d messed it up. Somehow I’d taken the trip downtown and the person I was to meet hadn’t.

What happens now, apart from the obvious rescheduling dance? What happens to my state of mind? And what happens to my experience of the next hour or so? Read more

‘it’ - the movie

Categories: the soul of business

You have a story worth telling. A story beyond powerful. But a story that’s difficult to tell. The world has to experience it, to experience you, in order to understand.

Your attempts to articulate that ‘vision’ and why you do what you do using words, falls short. Way short. Even to yourself.

What if you were able to capture ‘it’ on film. A captivating articulation of what you have always meant to say. And were then able to show the world.

After shooting this film (commission) and before its release, global innovation agency Maddock Douglas experienced a 25% rise in sales

This is what Mike Maddock, their founding partner had to say;

‘… I met Nic at an MIT, global entrepreneurship program. Nic’s message, technique, passion and results immediately captured my imagination–so much so that we hired him to take a closer look at our company. Within a month, Nic had helped us to rediscover a part of our company that our clients cherished but we could no longer see. We’ve taken his valuable insight seriously and it has made our work better and our people happier. Most importantly, it has lead to clarity of vision which makes decisions about our future easier and more powerful.’

I heard a line in a song a while back - ‘I’ve got sunshine in my stomach …‘ (peter gabriel, actually)

A year ago, whilst walking through the woods on the way to the train station, that line jumped out at me again. Perhaps from behind a tree : )

Took me by surprise.

I wondered whether you might? … have sunshine in your stomach, that is.

And then I wondered what if you did?

working with Nic to capture the SOUL OF AN ENTERPRISE

FILM COMMISSION AUDIO (1 minutes 38 seconds)

[the words to the audio]

‘What might happen if the world were to be exposed to the true inner vision of an organisation.

To the intangible life that runs through it. To its reason.

Too often we and our organisations tell the world what we believe it needs to hear. But seldom does it express what we know to be true.

And truthful expression has a unique ability to change the world around us without pushing it.

With a camera and an ability to see beyond the usual words, I work with organizations to identify and to capture this intangible, this soul, and bring it to life on film. And within the organisation itself.

What might happen to your organisation if it were to identify and to articulate its soul.

And what might happen its performance and experience in the world it if it were to expose this soul.’

A thought just occurred to me.

What if the word inspire was really about the ability of a something to draw out the spirit that already exists within a someone.

Rather than fill that someone with ideas & opinions about who they could or should become.

An entire industry might crash : )

‘Perhaps it’s our superiority that keeps us from our own life.

And our capacity for humility that leads us to it.’

the soul of a nation

Categories: quotes & questions

‘Perhaps the soul of a nation is what lies within. Beneath the surface yet always there. Evident in its people, if you care to gaze in the right fashion.

Perhaps the soul of a nation is what it is capable of being.’

‘… all my life I was knocking on the door and when it finally opened, I realised that I had been knocking from the inside.’

I’m probably paraphrasing this (from Mowlana Jalaluddin Rumi, I believe) but when I heard it for the first time I got it, and that ‘got it’ was way beyond an understanding of what it meant.

And then I realised that I’d heard it before many many times and in many many ways.

I guess there’s a time and a way for everyone, just not one time or one way.

Suppose it might pay to keep our eyes open without straining them too hard : )

from Nic’s film ’smile’

————————–

We have a need for certainty. So we presume that we know.

That we control. That we’re in control.

But perhaps it’s our assumption that we’ll be here tomorrow that keeps us from our capacity to live.

And from our capacity to smile without reason.’
