FILM INTRODUCTION We have a need for certainty. So we presume that we know. That we control. That we’re in control.
But perhaps it’s our assumption that we’ll be here tomorrow that keeps us from our capacity to live.
And from our capacity to smile without reason.
FILM INTRODUCTION Shooting people - with a camera that is - in a foreign language that you don’t understand encourages an ability to listen beyond the words.
After meeting Feliciano Pop, I found that I didn’t actually need to know what he was saying. There was something else. Something far more powerful. My hope is that you too can see it.
FILM INTRODUCTION Perhaps this film is about the responsibility we hold for ‘ourselves & our lives’ to listen to the quietest of voices. Perhaps it’s about our responsibility to listen to the voice of others when we know they speak the truth. And then to act.
Perhaps it’s about the possibilities in such changing times. With changes that are often imperceptible and we can’t seem to ‘touch’. But then again, perhaps this short film is simply about a truly extraordinary human being, who reflects something in all of us.
FILM INTRODUCTION How often do we confuse the story of our life with who it is that we are. And how often do we use this story as the excuse to avoid living.
The story of Richard’s first thirty years is about as tragic as it gets but then something quite subtle and quite extraordinary appeared to have happened.

FILM INTRODUCTION The anonymous character in this film was sat at the back of a film screening event. The instant we met, I knew that I had to film her. Or more to the point I had to film her eyes.
So I asked. And she said ‘of course’. A few years ago I am not sure I would have acted on such a forward & perhaps socially unusual thought. And then it became more unusual.
FILM INTRODUCTION Relationships have this habit of presenting what could only be described as monumental obstacles. Not always but ’sometimes to often’.
We’ve all faced them at some stage. Some we’ve negotiated but some we just can’t seem to find a way through, over or around.
But why? Could it be that most relationships are based on need? A need that is often unspoken. A need to feel significant, a need to feel part of something, a need to feel loved.

* NOTE - this film was shot in 2005, not long after the film-maker had picked up a camera for the first time. And before he had worked out that he should switch autofocus off, and work with manual focus : )
FILM INTRODUCTION ‘Perhaps it’s our superiority that keeps us from our own life. And our capacity for humility that leads us to it …’

Occasionally you sit in a room with someone and are certain that your experience of life is better for it. This probably best describes Carlos Cabarrus.
He is a Jesuit Priest but I have to admit that I am not entirely sure what a Jesuit Priest is. And as usual, the label we seem to like to put on a person is of little importance.
FILM INTRODUCTION After spending time with Lee it was obvious that his experiences in life had changed him profoundly.
Maybe life shakes us all, until we take notice of what it is trying to tell us? And maybe we ignore it until we can’t anymore?
